Gentle Hair Removal Questions

What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a method of removing unwanted hair through a process called Photo-Thermolysis.

How does it work?
The laser emits a very specific beam of light, targeting melanin, which is the pigment in hair. The beam is absorbed by the dark pigment in the hair and hair follicle and creates heat. This heat destroys the hair and its associated growth structures.

Does it work for everyone?
Laser hair removal can work very effectively for almost everyone. The best candidates are light skinned people (who have not recently tanned) with dark hair. However all skin types can be treated. What this means for people with dark skin types, is that more treatment may be required to reach their desired results. Naturally blond and gray hairs often respond better to alternative forms of hair removal.

Is it safe?
Yes. Thousands of people have undergone laser hair removal with very low incidence of complications. Used properly by trained professionals, it is extremely safe. Our laser is safer than most because of the active cooling system, which protects the skin during treatment.

Why do you need Multiple Treatments?
Our hair grows in three different phases. Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen. In order for the treatment to be effective the hair must be in the anagen stage at the time of the therapy, which is the active growth phase. The treatments are usually done at four to six week intervals.

How many Treatments will I need?
This is highly variable and often unpredictable; typically to achieve the desired results an average of six treatments is necessary. Those people with sub-optimal skin or hair types may require more sessions.

What if my Results are Temporary?
Approximately 80-90% of people get very good long-term results.

Why do some People only Experience a Delay in Growth?
There are many reasons for hair growth from age, ethnic background, hormonal changes, medications, and many other factors. There could possibly be more several reasons for hair to grow such as insulin resistance, polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid problems, etc. To find out more about these conditions, contact your primary care physician.

Does it hurt?
The laser we use in our clinic is gentler than most because of the unique system of skin cooling. Each person is individually evaluated and our laser therapies will be tailored to you. Consequently, one person may feel more discomfort than another person. Many people especially those that have been using other methods, such as waxing, or electrolysis may have no discomfort at all. During your complimentary consultation, we may do some spot testing so you can understand what it will feel like. If necessary, a topical anesthetic can be applied.

What are the side effects?
Lasers have far fewer side effects than other systems available for the removal of hair including IPL (intense pulsed light), electrolysis, and even waxing. Lasers utilize a specific wavelength of light. Our system is a long pulsed alexandrite 755nm. This falls very close to the infrared in the color spectrum, absorbing black and brown melanin and reduces the damage to the surrounding tissue. As long as your hair is darker than your skin, you will receive very good results, with minimal side effects. A few people experience temporary pigment changes after laser treatments (2-10%). We can minimize these temporary changes by not treating “tanned skin”. A mild sunburn effect does sometimes occur, but resolves usually within a few hours following the treatment. There is no recovery time; normal activities can be resumed immediately.

What are the most common treatment areas?
Almost anywhere on the body can be treated. Common areas that women like to have treated are the underarms, bikini, face, legs, and arms. Common areas that men like to have treated are the back, shoulders, chest, abdomen, front and back of the neck. Areas such as the toes and fingers, sometimes get overlooked, but can be very effectively treated.

How much does it cost?
There is no charge for a consultation. However, a consultation is necessary to determine an exact cost. The cost is based upon the size and complexity of the area to be treated.
